INSP’s new western biography series, Wild West Chronicles sheds light on the unique story of Bass Reeves (Byron Preston Jackson) and how he became the first African American deputy U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi. Bat Masterson sits down for a talk with Judge Isaac Parker- “The Hanging Judge,” who recounts Reeves’ journey from 'escaped slave' to 'formidable lawman' in Arkansas and Oklahoma Territory.
After tracking and capturing Webb at his hideout using a well-devised scheme, Reeves is then tasked with the job a second time after Webb jumps bail. Reeves’ wife pleads with him to quit marshaling but the warrant he accepted and the oath he swore are irrevocable. Alone, he sets out after Webb, aware that this second time out might not prove as lucky.
With an exciting and action-packed scenario, the perilous life of a western lawman is presented through the eyes of Reeves, one of the best and most legendary who ever wore the badge. His struggle to keep his duty, family responsibilities and loyalties in order becomes apparent as he gets closer to serving the warrant no one else dares to. Parker explains that Masterson has understandably failed to get an interview with the deputy marshal himself, since Reeves was “never one to sing his own praises.” The episode concerns Reeves’ exploits in serving a warrant to one of the most dangerous outlaws in the west, Jim Webb.
