Wild West Chronicles— Charles Russell: The Cowboy Artist

By Christopher RobinsonWMD Senior Editor

An enlightening visit from Nancy Russell (Andrea Hickey), wife of the accomplished western painter Charles Russell and a crate’s worth of awe-inspiring artwork gives Bat Masterson (Jack Elliott) all he needs to share an inspiring and informative story with the readers of Dodge City’s ‘The Chronicle.’

Migrating from his home in St. Louis, the young Charles (George Christopher) arrives in Montana to experience the allure and appeal of the West firsthand.

Russell works on a ranch and rides his share of horses as he develops an insightful and detailed approach to his painting, specializing in the American frontier life he is fascinated by. The image of the Indians, who Russell believes may soon be forgotten, become a particular muse in his oeuvre.

Meeting Nancy in a boarding house, Russell and the refined young woman fall in love, court and marry as Russell hones his increasingly popular art, allowing the more shrewd and keen Nancy to handle his career’s managerial end. It is she that coaxes the occasionally drunken and insecure Russell into creating four new works for the upcoming World’s Fair in St. Louis.

Fine performances and an intriguing look at the “Cowboy Artist” whose brush graced over 4,000 paintings and brought the West to the rest of the world’s curious attention highlight this latest episode from INSP.

Charles Russell: The Cowboy Artist will premiere this Sunday, July 11th at 5:30PM ET and re-air Friday, July 16th at 11PM ET. Find out where to watch:  https://www.insp.com/
